An Enjoyable Spin-off

Bless Her Dead Little Heart (Southern Ladies Mystery #1) by Miranda James (Berkley Prime Crime mass market, 7 October 2014).

If you've read Miranda James' Cat in the Stacks mysteries, you'll be familiar with Miss An'gel Ducote and her younger sister Miss Dickce, who occupy the top rung of the social ladder in the town of Athena, Mississipi.  And you'll definitely remember Diesel, the Maine Coon cat from the above-mentioned series.

Diesel is staying with the elderly sisters while his human, Charlie Harris, is on vacation with his family.  The Ducotes have never had an animal live with them, but they love and respect Diesel.  But more changes will happen to the sisters' quiet life when one of their college sorority sisters descends on them out of the blue, claiming she's escaping from her children who are trying to kill her.

Knowing Rosabelle has a propensity for melodrama, the sisters nevertheless welcome her into their home. But a few hours later, her son arrives with his wife.  Then various other members of Rosabelle's extended family turn up at the Ducote's door, all of whom are (increasingly reluctantly) invited to stay.

Before long, the house (including the apartment over the garage!) is filled to capacity, and bustling more than the quiet ladies are accustomed to.  Then Rosabelle's daughter-in-law has a fatal fall down the stairs, and things become even more unsettled.

But despite the appearance of frailty Miss An'gel and Miss Dickce are quite capable, and with the help of Chief  Sheriff's Deputy Kanesha Berry and Diesel, they eventually figure out what's going on.

Diesel's fans will certainly enjoy spending time with him and the Ducote sisters while Charlie is out of the country!
